Alum Rock Flood Damage Estimations Rely on Needed Actions

7/27/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment Storm and flood damage restoration is no DIY task. Call the professionals at SERVPRO for fast and immediate service for your home.

Flood Damage Factors Change Estimations

Among the earliest needed actions after flood and water damages is determining the cost to the customer. While this can be an intricate process with several variables, knowing the expected out-of-pocket expense helps a customer have more confidence in the work. Several efforts and services could change the anticipated estimation, however.

Water and Flood Mitigation

SERVPRO must address flood damage in Alum Rock homes and businesses as soon as possible. Creating a restoration plan starts with choosing the needed mitigative steps to protect the property and prevent greater harm. In many ways, initial estimations and mitigation actions cannot fully begin without emergency services like these taking place:

  • Containment
  • Extraction
  • Controlled Demolition

Moving Damaged Contents Off-Site

While it is desirable and hopeful that the cleanup and restoration of your personal belongings, furniture, and other exposed contents can happen on-site, this is not always the case. Off-site recovery is recommended in some situations based on possible contamination or water damage levels. We have advanced equipment at our SERVPRO warehouse for cleaning, drying, and controlled-climate storage.

Drying the Residence Fully

The measures needed to fully dry and recover your home or business after water damage and flooding vary from one site to the next. It is critical to start these processes as mitigation nears its end, but this process does not happen overnight. The drying process continually evolves based on the readings of moisture detection equipment to determine if more tools are necessary if machines need to be moved, and if drying goals and milestones are getting reached as anticipated.

Flood damage is stressful enough without the guesswork of what it might cost you. Let our SERVPRO of NE San Jose team help provide detailed estimations and restoration plans to put you at ease. Give us a call now at (408) 834-7663.

San Jose Techs Remove Debris and Flood Damage

Many residents of San Jose are overwhelmed after floodwaters ravage their homes and businesses. Where do they start, and how will they ever recover?

One of your most important actions is to ensure your family's safety and call SERVPRO for assistance with cleaning up after flooding. While it is very tempting, there are some things you should not do. For example:

SERVPRO Techs Bring Professional Equipment for Complete Water Restoration Services

Alum Rock homes with water damage after heavy storms need immediate attention. A leaking roof or water coming in around a door or window can do significant damage in a short period.

SERVPRO technicians routinely handle flood damage cleanup in Alum Rock houses. This service normally consists of several layers, including:

  • Water extraction and drying
  • Cleaning and sanitizing
  • Repairs to the home

Floodwater Extraction and Drying

More often than not, floodwater appears to recede almost as fast as it enters a property. It soaks into porous objects and wicks into sheetrock, so often, there is little standing water when the technicians arrive on-site for the job. The tools used frequently for water removal include portable pumps and submersible units.

When water wicks into walls or ceilings, the drywall deteriorates rapidly and requires removal along with the wet insulation.  The opened wall cavity allows for air circulation during drying, and the discarding of saturated building materials helps bring down the interior air moisture levels at a more rapid rate.

Surface Cleaning, Mold Treatment, and Sanitizing

Any area of the home that the floodwater touches needs to get cleaned. SERVPRO techs have a large selection of cleaning agents that include EPA-registered solutions. The techs can identify early warning signs of mold growth and use their professional antimicrobial products to inhibit the growth and create an uninhabitable environment.

SERVPRO techs can handle a full range of repairs that are often needed post-water damage. Including big repairs such as drywall or carpet insulation and small details such as painting walls or installing trim.

SERVPRO of NE San Jose at (408) 834-7663 assists local Alum Rock residents as needed with flood damage cleanup. The trained, certified techs are available for any size job 24/7.

Are There Unexpected Benefits That Occur When Professionals Manage Flood Damage In San Jose Homes?

SERVPRO Incorporates Preventive Processes during Water Cleanup in Flooded Properties

A flooding event can ruin your immediate plans. However, there is nothing worse than enduring after-effects long after you address the damage. One advantage you enjoy from involving professionals in restoring your San Jose home is identifying and fixing secondary issues.

One of the seemingly trivial issues that can lead to long-term flood damage in San Jose properties is the loss of power. Storms can interrupt power locally or over a vast area. Without power completing, tasks such as water extraction or drying of wet materials are challenging. Secondary structural damage also happens when the structure is left long without heating. SERVPRO teams easily overcome this problem since we bring portable generators to the loss site, thus erasing all the necessary mitigation processes.

A variety of electrically operated equipment are necessary for completing tasks like:

Another problem that can linger long after a flooding incident is the contamination of materials, thus unnecessarily endangering the residents. Our SERVPRO combat contamination using chemical agents and removing porous materials since it is impossible to sanitize them. Our technicians spray EPA-registered disinfectants into the water at your premises. We also remove all porous materials such as carpets, pads, and insulation if they are affected by the contaminated floodwaters.

Other steps like proper moisture control are also useful in preventing secondary damages such as mold development and bad odors in the property.

The main steps that help reign in moisture include:

  • Improving air circulation
  • Heating the interiors
  • Dehumidification

The equipment we select depends on the magnitude of water, how high it needs to get lifted, and the solids and contaminants within. While some pumps in our arsenal can take a significant number of suspended solids, others will be better for high-lift capacity.

Professional Water Removal Services Equipment

SERVPRO has access to advanced technology for water clean up, including:

  • Submersible Pumps These pumps are used by our crews most often, especially in occupied spaces. They are quieter than other kinds of pumps, run on electricity, and have a broad capacity to handle anywhere from 100 to 18,000 gallons a minute.
  • High-Pressure Pumps – These are pumps used most often in high-lift situations, yet they are not the best for handling suspended solids. We use high-pressure pumps most for water extraction from underground garages or basements.
  • Self-Priming Trash Pumps – Whenever debris gets suspended within the water, we reach for this fuel-powered equipment first. Due to the limited lift capacity, they are best used when the lift-need is less than 25 feet.

How Threatening Can Flooding be to San Jose Homes?

Flooding can often be one of the most destructive emergencies that area homes face, so flood water extraction in San Jose properties must begin immediately. Standing water is devastating for houses, condos, and apartments. It is the immediate concern of responding technicians to address these pooling issues as soon as possible. Overexposure of building materials or contents can lead to microbial development or irreparable damage.

What Obstacles Prevent Efficient Water Removal Services?

Efficient water removal is not always a guarantee after flooding occurs. Many potential hurdles exist in the elimination of floodwater. Structural concerns are often among the most threatening conditions, as the property is unsafe for restoration and recovery services until these dangerous areas get addressed. The location of flooding can also be a point of concern when reaching the area with extraction devices could prove challenging. The damage assessment process can often determine where specialty drying or extraction efforts might be necessary.

How Can Flood Water Extraction Occur?

Our SERVPRO team arrives with several extraction devices capable of overcoming standing water as severe as several feet in depth. Quiet and continuous operation of these machines can ensure that we provide the most efficient water removal services for customers and protect their property as best as possible. Homes can become continually destroyed by standing water concerns, making the removal of this pooling a priority for responding technicians. We have several tools that can remove both water and any small debris that might be present. Some of these include:

  • Self-priming, gas-powered trash pumps
  • Electric submersible pumps
  • Extractor trucks
  • Wet vacuums and light wands

How Does Flood Water Extraction Benefit San Jose Homes?

Removing standing water is a considerable concern for all area homes and businesses. After flooding occurs, many contaminants and debris can be introduced to the household, much of which floats and spreads through standing water. Our professionals implement multiple extraction devices in our inventory to ensure that we can overcome this persistent threat and remove the several inches or more of pooling water on the surface throughout the property. Once water gets removed, identifying other potential issues and threats to the property can be easier.

No matter how threatening flooding might appear in area properties when flood water extraction gets started quickly, the situation is more manageable. Our SERVPRO of NE San Jose team has experienced water restoration professionals ready to mobilize quickly when emergencies occur to get flood water extraction, water clean up, and flood restoration started as soon as we can. Explore the Mysteries of San Jose

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

Outside view of Winchester Mystery House It's no mystery! SERVPRO can handle all of your storm damage.

San Jose Is More Than Just Silicon Valley

San Jose is well known as the heart of Silicon Valley and enjoys its association with the tech industry. With a population of 1,021,795, San Jose is the most populous city in the north of California and the state's third-biggest city overall.

San Jose is one of the USA's wealthiest cities and has a reputation for luxury and fine living. With its warm climate, reputation for innovation, and more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the USA, it is no wonder San Jose is known for its high living standards. Multiple famous tech companies are headquartered here, including eBay, Samsung, Zoom, Hewlett Packard, Cisco Systems, and PayPal.

However, there is more to San Jose than microchips and computers. The area also enjoys plenty of weird and wonderful attractions that will appeal to everyone from history buffs to ghost hunters.

No Visit to San Jose Is Complete Without A Stop At The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House is unquestionable one of the oddest sites not just in San Jose but in all of California. It might even be one of the strangest visitor attractions in the whole country.

The Winchester Mystery House must be seen to be believed. This enormous, rambling home spans an impressive 24,000 square feet. It cost a whopping $5 million to build between 1886 - 1922, making it worth around $71 million today.

However, it is not the size or the price that draws visitors to the Winchester Mystery House, but its strange origin story. Its sole occupant (apart from the household staff) was Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester and heir to much of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune.

Sarah designed the house and oversaw every aspect of its construction. Rumor has it that after W W Winchester died, a psychic told Sarah she must build a place to bring peace to the souls of those who were killed by Winchester rifles. No one is positive if this is true, but we do know one fascinating thing: Sarah employed architects to work on the house around the clock for almost 40 years.

The house is filled with strange architecture (including doors that open to reveal brick walls and one that opens onto a sheer drop to the courtyard below) and beautiful Tiffany glass pieces. Visitors can:

  • Explore a house with 10,000 windows, 2000 doors, 47 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and six kitchens.
  • Walk the rambling gardens filled with trees, statues, and over 10,000 box hedges.
  • See the history of Winchester goods in the Antique Goods Museum, which includes a wide range of Winchester products and marketing materials.
  • Visit the old stables and try their hand at ax throwing.

The attention to detail in the Winchester Mystery House is staggering. Sarah designed and oversaw its building despite having no master plan nor any experience in building houses. Most of the house is of redwood construction, but because Mrs. Winchester did not like Redwood's look, her builders had to apply a fake grain and stain to each plank before adding it to the building!

Weird and Wonderful Attractions Abound In San Jose

The Winchester Mystery House is undeniable one of the best-known and unusual attractions in San Jose, but the area is not short of other out of the ordinary things to see and do:

  • If you are feeling adventurous, walk or mountain bike to Drawbridge, San Jose's ghost town. The site was formerly known as Saline City and was built at the end of the 19th century. The town, although abandoned for over three decades, is gradually sinking into the marshland where it was founded. The last two miles are along train tracks on private property, so we recommend stopping nearby and admiring it from a respectful distance.
  • The mysterious Rosicrucian Order founded the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum. It features the biggest exhibition of mummies and Egyptian artifacts on the West Coast. The museum has been around since 1928 and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Jose. The building is next door to the Rosicrucian headquarters and peace garden and features a planetarium and research library.
  • If you've ever fancied getting up close with a mammoth, come and visit Lupe The Mammoth. Lupe is a life-sized mammoth sculpture that commemorates an unusual discovery. In 2005 a dog walker by the Guadalupe River discovered the bones of a juvenile Columbian mammoth. The best way to reach Lupe is by walking or biking the trails beside the Guadalupe River.
  • If you've ever speculated what it would be like to live in a giant's world, come and visit Monopoly in the Park. This giant Monopoly board is situated in Discovery Meadow and covers 900 square feet. The board was first made in 1992 for the San Francisco Landscape and Design Show. You are free to walk around the vast granite squares any time, but you can also book the board for a real-life Monopoly game, complete with hats that resemble playing pieces.

SERVPRO Does Not Let Flood Damage Stop The Fun In San Jose

Although San Jose has a pleasant climate, it is not immune to storms and flooding.

In 2017, San Jose suffered severe flooding, with officials concerned about the potential for damage around the Coyote Creek area. Thankfully no lives were lost, but the incident reminded San Jose residents that flooding could strike even here.

Flood damage is very concerning for residents. Water has the potential to soak into carpets and drapes, baseboards, and even plaster and insulation. Once water saturates a material, there is a risk of mold damage, water damage, color bleeding on fabrics, and structural damage to the building.

Flood damage cleanup is made more complicated if there is sewage, chemicals, bacteria, or other dangerous materials in the water. That is why SERVPRO trains our technicians to assess each situation and take appropriate health and safety precautions. We provide our teams with safety equipment, including:

  • Tyvek Suits
  • Breathing apparatus
  • Long gloves
  • Hard hats and boots

We will advise you on which items we can save and which you should toss. We can also help with disinfection, antimicrobial treatments, and deodorization.

Some Tips from SERVPRO to Prevent and Mitigate Storm Damage to Your San Jose Residence

While San Jose residents are careful to prepare for a disaster, they may be surprised at the costs incurred by property and structural losses. Just one inch of floodwater can cause as much as $20,000 in damages, which can entail significant losses that are beyond the scope of consumer-grade products to safely clean, repair, replace, and restore.

SERVPRO technicians are prepared to provide flood damage mitigation for San Jose homes 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) accredited crew closely follows restoration industry best practices with the help of EPA-registered, OSHA-approved sanitation solutions designed to remove microbial growth and bacteria.

Protecting Your Foundation

  • Before flooding occurs, consider the grading of your property. Make sure the surrounding land slopes away from the home to prevent water accumulation.
  • Measures such as French drains and rain gardens with native, highly absorbent plants can lessen the impact of a flood.
  • Make sure your downspouts discharge water at least five to seven feet away from your home.
  • Check the foundation periodically for signs of cracks, damage, or chalky efflorescence that can indicate prior exposure to moisture.
  • Leave some clearance between plants and other items near your home. Keeping water-exposed foliage and belongings too close to your structure can trap unwanted moisture and create water damage over time.

SERVPRO Technicians Remove Floodwater Quickly

SERVPRO’s flooding extraction tools and techniques focus first on removing solids before eliminating any remaining standing water. Submersible, gas-powered sump pumps, as well as portable and truck-mounted extraction units, are vital to this end. Sanitation is also a key component before drying since flooding often brings in sewage, pests, and chemical runoff that can affect the safety of a structure.

Are you Prepared for a power outage?

Ready KIt

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. Depending on the nature of the disaster road conditions may prevent help from arriving in a timely manner.

Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.  If the power goes out keep your pipes from freezing by shutting off the valve that allows water to come into your home. Then, open any drain valves and all faucets and let them run until the pipes are empty (it's helpful to identify these valves in advance). Next, flush all toilets and pour denatured alcohol into toilets and sinks to prevent water in the traps from freezing. Do NOT use automotive antifreeze in case there's trouble with your water system; you don't want the antifreeze to contaminate your drinking water. You may, however, use nontoxic antifreeze that's made for winterizing motor homes.

Be prepared for a power outage by keeping necessary items centrally located in your home. Take the time to ensure that everyone in your family is aware of the "kit." Periodically check your kit to see that batteries operate properly. The following is a list of items that are suggested to keep on hand:

1.     Flashlights for each family member

2.     Battery-operated radio and clock

3.     Extra batteries

4.     Containers of bottled water

5.     Canned, freeze-dried or dehydrated food, powdered milk, baby supplies for infants

6.     Non-electric can opener

7.     List of important phone numbers

8.     First-aid kit

Following a disaster, there may be power outages that could last for several days. Stock canned foods, dry mixes and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils. The following items are suggested when selecting emergency food supplies. You may already have many of these on hand.

•Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

•Choose foods your family will eat.

•Remember any special dietary needs.

•Avoid foods that will make you thirsty.

•Choose salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals and canned foods with high liquid content.

•Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener

•Protein or fruit bars

•Dry cereal or granola

•Peanut butter

•Dried fruit

•Canned juices

•Non-perishable pasteurized milk

•High energy foods

•Food for infants

•Comfort/stress foods
